Why Are Broadway Shows So Popular?
Every year more and more people from all over the world are coming to New York City to see a Broadway show. Broadway musicals are getting more and more popular. Each year television viewing audiences are growing bigger while tuning into the Tony Awards (an annual award show that celebrates and honours Broadway theater). This tells us something. That people are appreciating good quality entertainment, and are even willing to pay high ticket prices for a good seat to have the one of the happiest experience of their lives! Families are bring their children to see Broadway shows because they understand the value of introducing young people to live theatre. And even the White House honours Broadway every year, by inviting the show's talented cast to come for a visit to perform unforgettable Broadway song and dance numbers for the first family. In fact, this year the show was Hamilton, the new hit Broadway show that is breaking all kinds of box office records, and has been honoured with many awards including the Pulitzer prize for drama! You can watch the video here of President Obama talking about the Hit Broadway show Hamilton.
So what is it about Broadway that is attracting more and more people? Who knows? Maybe people want to remembering the joy of feeling alive while forgetting the day-to-day reminders of doom and gloom in the world. Or perhaps people come to NYC to have the rare opportunity to see all the best talent, actors, singers, dancers, coming together on one stage to perform their hearts out, live, right in front of them? Whatever the reason, Broadway shows are more popular than ever because people want to feel happy again, to dream again, and to uplift their spirits even if it's just for three hours. And what better way to do this than to see and enjoy a glorious Broadway show!
Broadway Tips for Families With Small Children
For parents of small children who are visiting New York City and who want to see a Broadway show, this is for you!
I remember my first Broadway musical when I was 10. It was “Annie”, the original Broadway production and cast with Andrea McArdle as Annie! It was a great experience for me which I still cherish and remember to this day. And needless to say I became a great fan of Broadway!
But sometimes it may not be so convenient for parents to take small children to a show, so if this is the case, you might be better to consider leaving the young ones with a babysitter while you enjoy a Broadway show. Yes, it's possible to get a babysitter to come to your hotel! There are some good agencies in NYC that can send a babysitter if you need one. Here is one that I would highly recommend. Barnard College is an all-girls college and they have a highly reputable babysitting program. You can check out their site by clicking here or read about them at http://barnardbabysitting.com/parents/frequently-asked-questions/
If you definitely want to bring children under 12 years old to a Broadway show, then please consider the content by getting familiar with the show first. You can read a great magazine article here that explains all the best shows for families with kids visiting NYC. And you can see great videos right here on showsonbroadway.com too! Just click on the show and it will take you to directly to the show's page where you can view the video and other information about the show.
Here is our advise for parents of children under the age of 8 years old:
* First check with the show to find out the minimum age.
* The child will have to be seated in the theater, so you will have to buy an additional ticket for the child.
* Please make sure the children are fed and go to the bathroom before the show.
* Appropriate shows for them to see are shows like The Lion King, Cats, Aladdin and Finding Neverland, also some musicals that are not too quiet, like School of Rock - The Musical, in other words shows that would never bore them and would make them want to get up and dance in their seat! And it’s also better to take them to a matinee rather than an evening show.
We also recommend for older children 9 years and older the musicals School of Rock and Wicked.
